The girl does an awkward curtsy and seems unsure about her new position. She takes a break and that is unusual for her, making time for reflection and contemplation, like in a game of chess. Though sometimes that too has to be played fast. The bird helps her and gives her strength and support to ward off the hands trying to get hold of her cord. Wearing a crown of colourful flowers hope is within reach.
The painting is about habits and patterns, about changing direction and the contrast between the rush of life and comtemplation - and about taking care of yourself.
