The painting is inspired by the poem 'Raven' written by Edgar Allan Poe. The story of the ivory raven which visits a greaving widower; who lost his beloved Lenore.
The widower seeks comfort and answers from the Raven - will he ever se his beloved again or find love again. The Raven sends him further and further into despair when it repeats the answer: "Nevermore".
In the painting the word 'Nevermore' has been crossed out and replaced with 'Maybe once again'.
It seems almost blasphemous to change the words in the classic poem but hope can never die.
There are two paintings in this series.
